The Falstaff Experience Investigation Report
Investigation File - Page 2
Location: (Stratford upon Avon, England)
Date: 8th August 2009
Time: 10:00pm - 6.00am
Duration of Investigation: 8 hours - Overnight
Investigation Outline
Several groups were initially assigned by Ian and myself, this was due to the large size of our investigation team, and the need to control the environment.
Two investigators remained at our technical Hub located next to the museum shop watching and logging the 8 DVR cameras from two monitors. This was to ensure that nothing was missed and any anomaly could be watched back at a later date without having to sit through 8 hours of recorded video. We also had the live web stream being run and operated independently from this location.
The groups made there way inside the building at intervals, keeping in contact with the DVR room, Ian and myself via our two-way radios. Each group were recalled after set time periods and were debriefed by myslef or Ian at our base camp. This allowed us to listen to EVP's, discuss their experiences, and flick through any photgraphs taken.
The experiences had by the team differed greatly, from no activity to unexplained EMF spikes and whispered voices.
The Evidence
Ian and I paired off and ventured into the building with the Fluke Thermal Imager, and an IR video camera. We remained on the ground floor in the Henry VIII room, and moved quietly through sweeping the whole area for any anomalous heat signatures. I was recording using the IR video camera whilst Ian was carefully panning around the room, when he shouted at me to move out of the way. Ian had managed to take a snapshot of something that he saw before I had crossed his path in the darkness of the room.

This image amzingly shows a figure crouching or praying in the room. Ian and I were alone and the figure captured here was sat in the middle of the room. There is a definite heat signature coming from the head and the lower legs, and a very strange cooler part to the figure's mid region.
Ian and I also captured a huge thermal imprint of a hand on the floor by one of the exhibits in the adjoining room. The colour of the image indicates that the hand print had been made very recently and it appears that the hand was not placed entirely flat on the ground.

The print is very large, and the heat pattern suggests that just the fingertips and bottom portion of a left handed palm had been placed on the floor. The space between the thumb, little finger and palm cheeks also suggests that it is a huge hand. If the hand had been placed completely flat on the floor there would have been more of a heat pattern left by the imprint including the fingers and a complete thumb.
Note: Bongo had earlier identified a male presence on the first floor of the building with huge hands.
Folowing these incredible images, Ian and I decided to head back to base camp and look at them in more detail. We showed John Ford the co-owner of the building and he was astonished. John explained the story of the young pickpocket who worked at the tavern many hundreds of years ago. Legend goes that she fell ill and her parents lacked the funds to pay for her to be treated. The girl was in a deep coma and presumed dead by the local physician. Her parents needed money desperately and sold her body to a local surgeon who was studying gastrointestinal disorders. The surgeon disembowelled the girl only to have her wake up and find herself fatlily mutilated. She died almost instantly, but her soul is said still haunt the building and it's grounds.
Ian and myself felt overwhlmed with sadness and excitement at such an amazing piece of evidence, and talked at legnth about the night and events.
At around 04:00 Ian, Piers and I returned to the main building and headed upstairs to investigate the first floor.
We walked through the corridor of exhibits, and I recorded the events using a digital voice recorder to possibly capture any EVP's. We heard lots of strange creaks and moans but could not logically identify the causes.
As we entered the same location that Ian and I had earlier experienced high EMF spikes, Ian panned towards the door with the Fluke Thermal Imaging Camera and saw what appeared to be a figure standing in the doorway. There was no distinguishing heat pattern and our initial thoughts were that it may have been one of the mannaquin figures from an exhibit in the next room.
We shone our torches in the direction to see what or who was there, but saw nobody standing in the doorway and nothing that resembled a human figure in either vacinity or direction of the camera. As soon as we re-estabalised the camera again to view the figure it was gone. We had no explanation for it, but Ian had quickly taken one snapshot.

Upon retracing our steps we entered the corridor where Bongo had earlier felt a dark non human entity and the spirit of a hung man during the walkaround. I was at the front and heard a loud breath ahead of me, and immediately asked if anybody had heard it also. both Piers and Ian agreed that they had heard it and we began to call out more forcefully to gain a further response. nothing more occured up there, and we decided to end the short vigil and return to our team. We analysed the audio captured on the device and on the video camera and were surprised to not only faintly capture the breath, but another louder anomalous sound just before, which neither of us had heard at the time.
A strange 'witch' like laughter can be heard before the breath on the following recording.
EVP 1 - Falstaff 'Laughter & Breath'
Upon further analysis of the entire recording we have identified several other EVP phenomena.
EVP 3 - Falstaff 'Who's there'
This array of evidence has truly astonished the G.P.S team and its many members. The clarity of the EVP's and the images captured on the Fluke Thermal Camera are quite impressive items of evidence to lay claim to the fact that The Shrieves House (Falstaff Experience) is indeed haunted.
The other investigators all had experiences. Some where more tangible than others. Investigator Phil Measey was assiting our technical team setting up in the building when something unseen slapped him on the head. Once again Phil was subjected to an assualt, as he did at Beachy Head and last year in Leyland, Lancashire.
Phil also captured this EVP in the Penny Arcade Room whilst leading a small group of investigators and guests.
Following the main investigation Ian and I asked the team who would be brave enough to spend some time alone on a solo vigil. Hella Norenz jumped at the opportunity, and took just a video camera, walkie talkie and a torch with her.
Alone In The Dark
Investigator Hella Norenz personal experience of the Ship Room:
" I knew that the spirit of the mass murderer John Davis was supposed to be in there and that his preferred victims were blond womenm so I thought I would try and provoke him a little! "
" First of all I introduced myself and asked if he was present. Then I suggested that he could make himself known to me by knocking at the door or on the wooden railing in front of the exhibit. I waited patiently, but nothing happened. Infact I heard nothing at all. There was no sound anywhere, It was as if the whole room was wrapped in cotton wool. "
" I decided to provoke him a bit, and asked provoking sarcastic questions, like: If you think you are such a brave man, and that you can kill women and children, why don't you even have the guts to give me a sign of your dominat presence and knock at the door? or are you too weak,? "
" I knew, that he preferred blonde women as victims, I mentioned that my hair was blonde and that I would be perfect for his likings and called him a coward.
I felt a bit awkward standing there in the middle of the room, chatting to seemingly nobody, so I sat down on the bench beside the wall."
" As I sat down, I asked again for a sign of his presence like knocking, talking or whatever he favoured. Just then I started to get a really heavy feeling in my chest, as if someone had wrapped there arms around my ribs and slowly started pressing them together. It wasn't painful, and it made me feel uneasy. I also had the feeling as if my throat was closing up a little."
" What is so remarkable about this experience is that I had the exact same feeling earlier on in the evening, when I was up there with Matt and also sat in the same spot on the bench."
" I asked John Davies, if it was him, who caused the feeling in my chest, and told him to give me an answer by knocking at the door next to me, but again I got no response. I asked a few more random questions and also called him a weak little man and a coward, but that also led to no result. I decided to end my solo vigil, and return back to base camp to rejoin the team."
Several other members of the team also volunteered to spend some time alone in different parts of the building. Sheena Prew, Phil Measey, Toni Seale and our guests all successfully carried out a solo investigation of one particular part of this creepy building.
Trainee Investigator Sheena Prew's personal experience of the First Floor Staircase:
" I was sat at the top of the stairs near the plague victim exhibit. It was dark, quiet and I only had a camcorder for company, I felt very nervous. For the first 10 mins nothing happened, then it sounded as though somebody had breathed quite close to me. I convinced myself that it was someone in the DVR room below, but once my solo vigil ended a few minutes later I went to check. Ian and Piers said that it hadn't been them, but Ian said that Barri, Piers and himself had also heard the same thing when they were in that area of the building earlier in the night."
Investsigator Phil Measey conducted a solo vigil in the Henry VIII room.
Here is a brief personal account of his solo vigil:
"I sat down on the narrow staircase in the Henry VIII room and immediately felt like someone was standing behind me looking over me. I was very unnerved and began to record my feelings to camera. All the time I was sat there I was constantly aware of eyes boring holes into me and I felt like at any moment something was going to happen to scare me witless."
Barri & Ian's Final Thoughts
"The Falstaff experience is a unique blend of history, and legend. The building seems to be like a book thick with pages from different periods of time and people long time dead. It could have been a play or novel in it's own right."
The G.P.S team arrived with high expectations, and left with questions, and a burning desire to return. The evidence that we gathered has been some of the best ever obtained on any investigation, and we personally enjoyed the night immensely.
What Did We Achieve?
We have obtained several very clear EVP recordings that really defy logic and scientific reasoning. All variables have been accounted for and there is no possible explanation for the voices that were caught using our digital voice recorders.
The thermal images captured with the Fluke Thermal Imaging Camera, are utterly astonishing! The figure Ian captured in the Henry VIII room is beyond belief. A full bodied human figure crouching down is clearly visible. There is no arguing that it is of human form. The only contention would be that another member of the team posed for the image. We can honestly say that we were alone at the time, and that the thermal imager could not misinterpret something of that size, intensity or temperature.
In our opinion, this image shows the spiritual energy of possibly the young pickpocket girl that met her demise at the hands of the surgeon. The bluish colour around her mid region suggests to us that the wounds inflicted on her by the surgeons knife are still visible even in death. Is that a strange coincidence or amazing piece of paranormal evidence?
The thermal handprint has me baffled. If another member of the team had been there with us we would have known, and if it was made by the previous group that investigated the same room we were in, the imprint would have been very cold. The colour would have been a dark blue or purple.
The image in the doorway taken by Ian on the Thermal camera, is also unexplained. We checked all possible explanations and causes at the time and could find no reason for the image. Who was it?.....We feel it may have been the spirit of serial killer John Davis looming in the next room.
The EVP's we captured were all quite rude and angry words that were spoken. Either they were spoken by the same entity, or several of the ghosts we encountered did not feel happy that we were looking for them. They are all fairly clear and audible and at least one of them meets a class A recording.
Is The Falstaff Experience Haunted?
YES....We have no problem saying otherwise. We feel the building houses several spirits, and many of which are very active by day and night. It is not surprising that the place has been deemed one of England's Most Haunted Buildings. we can now see why!
We have only scratched the surface of this place. We will go back and we will uncover more. The evidence we obtained during our brief investigation has only made me think about further techniques to prove or disprove that places like this are indeed 'haunted' by people who once lived, worked, or frequented them.
Thank You
G.P.S would like to thank John and Janet Ford for their hospitality and assistance with the interviews and general information. Thank you for allowing G.P.S to investigate such as amazing location.
We would also like to thank Darren and Lisa form our sponsor RS.com Without their kind contribution of the Fluke thermal Imaging Camera we would not have had such amazing evidence to report. We would also like to say thank you for your patience and professional attitude during a very long and entertaining night.
Finally we would like to thank the G.P.S Team. You were all very professional, and used common sense, logical reasoning and courage during this investigation. Without your efforts and excellent attitude this investigation would not have been as good as it was. We would also like to personally thank Piers O'Neill for his brilliant work so far on creating the hour long VT that will be aired on the Paranormal Channel or 'The Unexplained Channel' as it now called.
Good Luck G.P.S this investigation was a pleasure to report.
Holy Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
