Exeter Castle is located in the city centre, in Northernhay Park. 79 miles south-west of Bristol, on the A369-M5-B3183.
Exeter Castle is an 11th century Norman stone ringwork fortress, founded by Baldwin de Brionne. Its strong earthworks and curtain wall are flanked by square and round towers, which command the north-west corner of the old town wall. In the 18th century, the remaining medieval buildings inside the walls were levelled, to make way for the Georgian Assize County Courts.

A plaque near the gatehouse details the times of witchcraft and hangings in the late 1600's. Executed at Exeter Castle after being found guilty for witchcraft were Temperance Floyd, Mary Trembles and Susanna Edwards on 18th August 1682. Susanna and Mary wept on the way to the gallows while Temperance apparently did not seem to care. In 1685 Alice Molland was the last execution for witchcraft in England.

There have been hundreds of ghost sightings at Exeter castle ranging from witches to the spirits of children. Many visitors have reported feeling watched by unseen forces and have been touched by unseen hands. Recently two women who attended an event at the castle were left alone in one of the holding rooms. One of the women had to be removed from the building after experiencing what she describes as being mentally tortured by malevolent forces.
Exeter is one of the top spots for ghostly sightings in the UK, It is rated as the fourth most haunted city, with nine out of every 10,000 residents reporting a ghost sighting since records began.
